- Socket set
- Serpentine belt tool or breaker bar
- Torque wrench
- Battery terminal wrench
Parts & Estimated Costs
| Part | Cost | Recommended Brands |
|---|---|---|
| Alternator (new or remanufactured) | $150-500 | OEM, Denso, Bosch, ACDelco, Remy |
| Serpentine belt (replace while you're in there) | $20-60 | Gates, Continental, Dayco |
Step-by-Step Repair
- Test first: battery should read 12.4-12.6V with engine off
- Start engine - battery should read 13.8-14.4V at idle
- If voltage stays at battery level, alternator is not charging
- Load test: turn on headlights, AC, radio - voltage should stay above 13.5V
- Disconnect negative battery terminal
- Remove serpentine belt - note routing diagram first
- Take photo of belt routing before removal
- Disconnect electrical connectors from alternator
- Remove alternator mounting bolts (usually 2-3)
- Remove alternator - may need to wiggle or pry gently
- Compare old and new alternator - mounting, pulley, connectors must match
- Install new alternator, torque bolts to spec
- Reconnect electrical connectors
- Reinstall serpentine belt with correct routing
- Reconnect battery
- Start engine, verify charging voltage is correct
- Test all electrical accessories
Pro Tips
- A bad battery can kill a new alternator - test battery first
- Some vehicles need the ECU told a new alternator was installed (BMW, Mercedes)
- If the battery light is on but voltage is correct, check the exciter circuit
- Clean all electrical connections - corrosion causes charging problems
